Federal Minister Dr. Musadik Malik Urges Urgent Realignment with Global SDGs: "Time Is Running Out"
Speaking at the high-level forum held in Islamabad, titled "Accelerating Reform, Investments and Economic Transformation towards Agenda 2030", Dr. Malik expressed grave concern over Pakistan’s standing in the 2024 SDG Index, where the country ranks 137 out of 166 with a score of 57.02—the lowest among South Asian nations. He contrasted this with regional neighbors such as India (63.99), Bangladesh (64.35), and Sri Lanka (67.43), noting that Pakistan must urgently reverse this trend. “We are on the brink of water scarcity, yet lack the seriousness this issue demands,” he warned, referring to Pakistan’s worsening water crisis as a “silent national emergency.” Dr. Malik highlighted critical shortfalls in areas such as clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities, climate action, and institutional reform, and emphasized the lack of a unified national SDG strategy. He underscored the urgent need to bridge data inconsistencies between federal, provincial, and international agencies that are hindering transparent, evidence-based decision-making. The Minister painted a bleak picture of urban life in Pakistan, citing rampant pollution, contaminated water, and mismanaged waste as drivers of environmental degradation. “Our cities are among the most polluted in the world — this is not progress, but environmental collapse,” he declared. In a strong call to action, Dr. Malik appealed to public institutions, civil society, and the private sector to act collaboratively and decisively. He stressed the importance of climate adaptation, improved governance, investment in sustainable infrastructure, and enhanced access to climate finance. “Development is not just about numbers — it is about clean air, safe drinking water, dignified living, and a secure future,” he affirmed. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination reiterated its full commitment to working with all stakeholders — including provincial governments, NGOs, and international development partners — to accelerate progress on the SDGs. Dr. Malik concluded with a stark message: “Time is running out. Either we act now, or history will leave us behind.”
In a compelling keynote address at the Pakistan SDGs Policy Dialogue for Action, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, called for an urgent overhaul of Pakistan’s development approach to align with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
