Musadik Malik stresses importance of high-quality carbon credits in combating climate change
Islamabad, March 24, 2025: Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Musadik Malik highlighted the significance of generating high-quality carbon credits in combating climate change. He emphasized the government's focus on targeted projects to drive international funding and cooperation. Minister Malik outlined the government’s commitment to tackling climate change, stating that Pakistan’s petroleum sector is starting to play a crucial role in spearheading a green revolution in the country. He highlighted that Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has launched a renewable energy program, while Marri Petroleum is also making strides toward transitioning to renewable energy sources. During the discussion, Minister Malik urged the need for practical and tangible solutions rather than merely signing Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to address climate change. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between the two countries to initiate real, impactful projects that could mitigate the effects of climate change in Pakistan. The Minister also shed light on the government’s specific focus on addressing climate challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). These regions are particularly vulnerable to climate-related impacts, and targeted initiatives are necessary to mitigate the adverse effects they face. Additionally, Minister Malik stressed the direct relationship between the cropping season and carbon emissions, underscoring the importance of documenting water supply systems and improving waste management strategies to combat climate change effectively. By focusing on these critical areas, the government aims to create a more sustainable and resilient future for the country. Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change, Aisha Humaira Moriani briefed the meeting on the ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive National Adaptation Plan (NAP). She revealed that provinces are actively involved in shaping the plan, and a collaborative approach is being adopted to ensure its effectiveness across the country. Furthermore, she shared that the Ministry is working on a Glacier Conservation Strategy, which is set to be finalized soon. This strategy will play a vital role in preserving Pakistan's glaciers, which are critical for water resources in the region. Ambassador Jakob Linulf acknowledged the severe impact of climate change on Pakistan and reiterated Denmark’s commitment to assisting Pakistan in its efforts to address these challenges. He emphasized Denmark’s readiness to provide support in climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives, recognizing the urgency of collaborative action to safeguard the future of the country and its citizens.
The Minister made these remarks during a meeting with the Danish Ambassador to Pakistan, Jakob Linulf, who paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Climate Change in Islamabad on Monday.
